Join Dr. Mark Komrad for this follow-up presentation to the July 1st MAID session. These procedures are legal in many states; PA is not included, but that does not mean, per Dr. Komrad, they are ethical or even constitute “medical” practice. According to him, many clinicians may not have had an opportunity during the July session to hear all information about how these practices and laws are being deployed, the loopholes, the lack of guardrails, and the misadventures. Dr. Komrad believes that clinicians have not been exposed to deep ethical inquiry about this, or consider the public policy consequences and implications for fundamentally changing what it means to be a physician, in marked departure from the Hippocratic medicine.
Dr. Komrad will review the current picture of laws and practice in the U.S. and internationally and arguments why it is neither good medical ethics nor good public policy. Dr. Komrad will provide an overview of the current laws in the US and internationally permitting medical assistance in dying (MAID), its flaws, the lack of reliable guardrails and oversight. Additionally, he will review ethical arguments regarding why psychiatrists in particular should not be providing MAID while also trying to prevent suicide and close with a review of public policy consequences of framing these practices as “medical” procedures.
Educational objectives:
• Attendees will review data on MAID in the US and medical euthanasia in Canada and Benelux, with particular data on their use with psychiatric patients and the chronically disabled.
• Attendees will be able to understand the “slippery slope” of how these practices have evolved in the living laboratories of states and countries that have been providing these procedures.
• Attendees will be able to identify the essential ethos and core values of what it means to be a physician, especially a psychiatrist and how providing MAID for patients inverts that ethos, interfering with suicide prevention efforts.
• Attendees will be able to question the ethical appropriateness of being part of the chain of culpability in providing MAID, even by psychiatrically evaluating patients for these procedures or referring to others who will participate in the evaluation or administering lethal means.
